Letter Signed ‘Sidney Lee’ (the body of the letter in the hand of a secretary), sending a list [not present] of ‘the hundred greatest Englishmen in all fields of great achievement’, explaining that he has included three women, Queen Elizabeth, George Eliot, and Mrs.Siddons, but putting forward three substitute men if ‘convenience dictates the omission of women’: Lord Burghley, Oliver Goldsmith, and Edmund Kean. 2 pp. in a secretarial hand, signed by Lee. 7 x 4.5 inches.
