Sir John William Kaye (1814-1876), military historian, author of The History of the War in Afghanistan (London, 1851), succeeded John Stuart Mill as secretary of the political and secret department of the India Office. “No man loved the old Field-Marshal more than I did, and he, and others, said that he loved me as a son.”
