Autograph Letter Signed [to Professor Owen, according to a pencilled annotation, confirmed by a reference to Mrs. Owen], asking him to “scribble down a few remarks” on the habits of fish, to assist Jesse with his forthcoming address to the Brighton Fishermen, referring also to the gourami fish found in the Burmah River. 3 pp. 7 x 4 inches, first page heavily and unevenly toned, the other pages good. 8 Old Steyne, Brighton, 14 January 1860. Edward Jesse (1780-1868), writer on natural history. Besides contributions to the Gentleman’s Magazine, Bentley’s Miscellany, Once a Week, and The Times, Jesse wrote a number of works describing the countryside around Hampton Court, Windsor, and Eton. His interests in natural history and angling are reflected in his An Angler’s Rambles (1836) and Anecdotes of Dogs (1846).
