Autograph Letter Signed, to W.H.Ince, sending him an autograph of the Poet Wordsworth, explaining that he has been unable to obtain the Queen Dowager’s autograph. 3 pp. 7 x 4 inches, in good condition. Christ Church Oxford, 6 July 1847. Evidence of the early phase of the craze for autograph collecting. Richard William Jelf (1798-1871) was the fourth Principal of King’s College London. He was educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford, and was subsequently made a Fellow of Oriel College, Oxford. He served as canon of Christ Church, Oxford, and Principal of King’s College London from 1844 to 1868. The Jelf medal was established at King’s College London in his memory. He took an impartial stance over the Oxford Movement.
