Autograph Letter Signed ‘J.Michel, MG’ [Major-General], to Brigadier William Parke, during the campaign against Tantia Topee, about he will ride over to Bhopal while Parke “must stay behind your troops”, mentioning the miscarriage of letters. 2 pp. 7 x 4 inches, one filing hole, in good condition. Bhopal, 31 October 1858. Field Marshal Sir John Michel (1804-1886) commanded a brigade during the Kaffir Wars. In the aftermath of the Indian Mutiny, Michel commanded the Malwa Field Force, and, from August 1858, took command of the troops in Rajputana. Later he fought in the China War of 1860. Brigadier William Parke (1822-1897) commanded the 2nd Brigade of the Rajputana Field Force, including a column of light and irregular cavalry which included 100 of the 72nd (Duke of Albany’s Own) Highlanders mounted on camels.
