HUNT, William Holman. 19203

Autograph Letter Signed ‘W,Holan Hunt’, to Sir Edwin Arnold, asking whether he and Lady Arnold “would like to see the picture that I was then struggling with of The Miracle of Sacred Fire” which is “at last about finished”, suggesting a day when they might call. 2 pp. 7 x 4 inches, in good condition. Draycott Lodge, Fulham, 17 December 1898. W.Holman Hunt (1827-1910), Pre-Raphaelite painter. The Miracle of the Holy Fire (1892–1899) is a painting by William Holman Hunt which depicts the Greek Orthodox rite of the Holy Fire in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre Jerusalem. Hunt believed the fire to be a pious fraud which brought Christianity into disrepute. He intended the painting to be a satire in the manner of William Hogarth. Hunt published an elaborate keyplate explaining the identity of the various characters depicted. It is exhibited in the Fogg Art Museum, Cambridge, Massachusetts.
