With the original envelope (stamp removed). Wellesley, Sissinghurst, 2 February 1864. John Callcott Horsley (1817-1903), painter, treasurer of the Academy 1882-1897. He was a painter of genre and historical scenes, illustrator, and the designer of the first Christmas card. He was a member of the artist’s colony in Cranbrook. “I have not for some years made sketches for the pictures I have painted, nothing beyond a mere scribble intelligible only to myself.”
