Original manuscript receipt for 14 shillings for the third volume of The Diversions of Purley, signed ‘John Horne Tooke’. 3 x 4 inches, laid down, marginal defects but complete, receipt blindstamp. 3 February 1798. John Horne Tooke (1736-1812), clergyman, politician, and philologist, author of the philological treatise, The Diversions of Purley. Part 1 was published in 1786. Another edition, with a new second part, was issued in 1798.
