Description

Autograph Letter Signed ‘Caesar H.Hawkins’, making arrangements for a consultation. 1½ pages 6 x 4 inches, one light stain. 26 Grosvenor Street, 10 August [no year given]. Caesar Henry Hawkins (1798–1884), surgeon. For a long time he was known as the only surgeon to have performed the operation of ovariotomy successfully in a London hospital, and he did much to popularize the operation of colotomy. But he always leaned towards conservative surgery, and it was said of him that ‘he was always more anxious to teach his pupils how to save a limb than how to remove it’. Hawkins contributed many memoirs and lectures to medical journals which were collected and printed for private circulation with the title The Hunterian Oration, Presidential Addresses, and Pathological and Surgical Writings (2 vols., 1874).
