An original printed Commission, completed in manuscript and signed ‘Moira’ as Master-General of His Majesty’s Ordnance. appointing Thomas French to be One of the Company of Gentlemen Cadets in the Royal Regiment of Artillery. Countersigned by Calcraft, Clerk of Ordnance, and by Lt. Col. Thomas Sutton, Secretary. 15 x 9 inches, with the wafer seal of the Master-General of the Ordnance affixed, in good condition, minor repairs at folds. Office of Ordnance, 5 March 1806. Francis Rawdon-Hastings (1754-1826), 1st Marquis of Hastings, 2nd Earl of Moira, served with distinction in the American War of Independence, and became Governor General of India in 1813. His campaigns against the Mahrattas helped to establish the supremacy of British power throughout India. He purchased Singapore Island in 1819. He was appointed Governor of Malta in 1824. He died at sea off Naples two years later.
