Description

Autograph Letter Signed, to Henry Squire, instructing him to have the painting of the Bible collected from the Royal Academy “and pack it carefully in the case which lies with you” and send to Liverpool. 3 pp. 7 x 4 inches, in good condition. Edinburgh, 20 July 1846. Sir George Harvey (1806-1876), figure and landscape painter. From the late 1820s Harvey devoted himself to figure painting, the subjects of which were mainly derived from the history and the daily life of Scotland. He became best-known for his series depicting scenes from the covenanting period, including Covenanters Preaching and The Covenanters Communion. However, it was as a landscape painter that Harvey excelled; his execution was singularly spontaneous and unlaboured in the expression of the very spirit of border landscape and of the quiet sublimity of great stretches of rounded grassy hills.
