Autograph Letter Signed ‘Mary St. Leger Harrison’, to Miss Whitehead, explaining that she is unable open a Debate [at the Pioneer Club]. 3 pp. 7 x 4 inches, in fine condition. 6 Bullingham Mansions, Kensington, 1898. “The stage I am not alarmed at. But the platform, no. I am very far, I protest with all humility, from being a modern woman in my works or ways.” Lucas Malet was the pseudonym of Mary St Leger Kingsley Harrison (1852-1931), a Victorian novelist. Of her novels, The Wages of Sin (1891) and The History of Sir Richard Calmady (1901) were especially popular.
