Receipt Signed ‘W.V.Harcourt’ for “Secret Key No. 12, and three Yellow Boxes with corresponding numbers, for my use as Chancellor of The Exchequer. Also Cabinet Key No. 16.” 4½ x 7 inches, filing hole, in good condition. Undated, c.1892. Sir William George Granville Venables Vernon Harcourt (1827 –1904), lawyer, journalist and Liberal statesman. He served as Member of Parliament for various constituencies and held the offices of Home Secretary and Chancellor of the Exchequer under Gladstone before becoming Leader of the Opposition.
