Autograph Letter Signed, to William Jerdan, offering him his new novel (”not too naughtical”), “a half land, half water book”, one of the best he has done. 2 pp. 10 x 8 inches, right margin ragged and soiled, otherwise sound. 16 November 1837. William Nugent Glascock (1787?–1847), naval officer, entered the navy in January 1800 on the frigate Glenmore with Captain George Duff, and served throughout the Napoleonic Wars. In 1832 he was sent out to the coast of Portugal, and was stationed in the Douro, for the protection of British interests. Glascock produced between 1826 and 1838 several volumes of naval novels, anecdotes, reminiscences, and reflections. His Naval Service, or, Officers’ Manual (2 vols., 1836), was a useful manual for young officers.
