Description
The original “specimen of His Majesty’s signature”, in a letter from Ponsonby at Marlborough House to the Military Secretary at the War Office, to be made into “a stamp made of India Rubber, similar to that which was used for King Edward … so that I may show it to the King for his approval”. 1 page 10 x 8 inches, black borders, with an envelope (which contained the signature) affixed. With the separate signature ‘George R.I.” Marlborough House, 25 May 1910. King George V (reigned 1910-1935). A remarkable letter to survive. “My dear General, After explaining to the King the system of stamping Commissions which existed in the late King’s Reign and drawing His Majesty’s attention to the large number of Commissions which remain over still to be stamped, the King has reluctantly consented to have a stamp used with his signature.”
