Simla [India], 21 May 1870. Sir Henry Marion Durand (1812-71) served in the Afghan and Sikh Wars, and acted as agent in central India during the Mutiny. Durand accompanied Lord Ellenborough as the governor general’s private secretary, and was present with him at the Battle of Maharajpore (1843). From 1870 to 1871 Durand was Lieutenant Governor of the Punjab.
