Manuscript Order Signed ‘J.T.Duckworth’, to Henry D’Esterre Darby, Captain of H.M.S.Bellerophon, instructing him to himself under Duckworth’s Command “and follow such Orders as you may from time to time receive from me for His Majesty’s Service”. 1 page 13 x 8 inches, in good condition, horizontal folds. Docketed by Darby on verso. Given on board the Leviathan, Port Mahon [Minorca], 19 August 1799. “In pursuance of Orders from Rear Admiral Lord Nelson KB.” Admiral Sir John Thomas Duckworth (1748-1817) joined St.Vincent in the Mediterranean in 1797. He covered the operations to capture Minorca in 1798, and was made a Rear Admiral of the White on 14 February 1799. He defeated a superior French squadron off San Domingo in 1806. Henry D’Esterre Darby (d.1823) commanded the Bellerophon at the Battle of the Nile (1 August 1798).
