James Dafforne (1803/4–1880), writer on art, joined the staff of the Art Union (later the Art Journal) in 1845, and contributed to its pages for thirty-five years, until his death. His many books are mainly collections of articles which first appeared in the journal, containing pictures and a biographical sketch of the painter. The first to be published was Pictures by Charles Robert Leslie (1872); this was followed by similar books on Sir Edwin Landseer, J. M. W. Turner, and various popular early Victorian painters.
