Original Envelope (only), signed ‘Wm. Eyre’ as Major-General lower left, during the Crimea campaign, addressed to the Military Secretary of the Commander in Chief, Horse Guards, London. About 4 x 5 inches, partial strike of the Post-Office/ British Army cds on verso. Arrival postal marking, 27 August 1855. Major-General Sir William Eyre (1805-1859) commanded a column in the Kaffir War (1851), and commanded the second brigade of the 3rd Division under Cathcart in the Crimean War. He himself commanded the 3rd Division during the terrible winter of 1854-55.
