Richard Congreve (1818 – 1899) was the first English philosopher to espouse openly the Religion of Humanity, the godless form of religious humanism that was introduced by Auguste Comte, as a distinct form of positivism. “I hear you are going to leave our neighbourhood to decentralise yourself. Well it is a strong tendency and a strong temptation for all.”
