Description

Autograph Letter Signed as Bishop of Natal, about Biblical “difficulties”, maintaining a late date for the authorship of Deuteronomy. 3 pp. 7 x 4 inches, fine. 28 Sussex Place, South Kensington, 24 February 1864. John William Colenso (1814-83), Bishop of Natal. Charged with heresy in 1863 by his superior, Bishop Gray of Cape Town, Colenso was finally deprived of his see in 1869. Nevertheless, Colenso remained in situ. He composed a grammar, a dictionary and a New Testament translation in Zulu. “But are the words quoted in the narrative of Temptation less authoritative, less truly the Words of Faith, & therefore the Words of God – because they may have been written by such Prophet as Jeremiah instead of by Moses?”
