Autograph Letter Signed ‘Ed:Clarke’, saying that he has signed and sealed his publishing agreement, and hopes that Mr.Beckett can be persuaded to use his correspondent as the Printer of the work. 1 page 9 x 7 inches, minor defects, old repairs at edges. 1 May 1762. Edward Clarke (1730–1786), traveller and author. In 1760 he went with the earl of Bristol to Madrid as chaplain to the embassy, from which he returned after two years. Letters Concerning the Spanish Nation, Written at Madrid during the Years 1760 and 1761 (1763) abounds with detailed observation. He later went to Minorca as chaplain and secretary; he published in 1767 A Defence of the Conduct of the Lieutenant-Governor of the Island of Minorca in Reply to a Printed Libel.
