Original Letter, in the third person, and signed ‘The Marquis of Circello’, to the Commander of His Britannic Majesty’s Brig L’Espoir [Captain Robert Mitford], requesting the prisoner to be given up. 1 page 9½ x 7 inches, horizontal folds, in good condition. Palermo, 31 October 1808. It is remarkable that this original order, handed over on board HM Brig L’Espoir, should have survived. Tommaso Maria Somma, Marquis of Circello (1737-1826), Sicilian diplomat and chief minister. He requests that Captain Mitford “would be pleased to deliver up to the Officer, bearer of this, the Prisoner of whom he has taken Charge, the same officer being, by the Sicilian Government, to take the Prisoner on shore, so empowered.”
