Autograph Letter Signed “Your affectionate friend, Charles R”, to Colonel Rutherford, referring to Harry Bennett’s brother who is in Rutherford’s regiment and has deserved well of Charles, and requesting him to appoint this brother to the command of a company. 1 page 7 x 6 inches, with the integral address leaf, with a fine example of the red wax armorial seal [CR] from the King’s own ring, one tear (at seal opening) expertly repaired, some wormholes and staining. 7 April 1655 [written at Middleburgh, Netherlands, where Charles was from about 13 March to about 9 April 1655. King Charles II (reigned 1660-1685). “Harry Bennett” is most probably Henry Bennet, later a member of the Cabal ministry and Earl of Arlington, He was with Charles and James, Duke of York, in France and Flanders in the 1650s. Colonel Rutherford is probably Andrew Rutherford, a Scottish soldier in the French service, created Earl of Teviot in 1663. He was killed in 1664 at the Battle of Tangier.
