Autograph Letter Signed ‘J.Cartwright’, addressed “My dear Sir”, alerting him to the meeting at the Crown & Anchor to consider applying to the Duke of Bedford for land “sufficient for a statue of Riego, on the south side of Bloomsbury Square”, and to introduce “a subscription to defray the expence of the sculpture, the pedestal and the railng in”. 1 page 7 x 4 inches, one blank piece torn away, otherwise fine. 21 November 1823. “Thus let us speak to the crowned murderers of Riego!” A good letter by John Cartwright (1740-1824), the ‘Father of Reform’ and political writer. Rafael del Riego y Flórez (1784 – 1823), Spanish general and liberal politician, hanged in Madrid for treason on 7 November 1823.
