Description
A good Autograph Letter Signed ‘Calder Campbell’, to F.Herbert, hoping to publish “a small octavo vol of poems in the beginning of 1838”, discussing the most economical method of achieving publication. 4 pp. 7 x 4 inches, in good condition. 2 Norfolk Street, Strand [1837]. Major Robert Calder Campbell (1798–1857), soldier and miscellaneous writer. He was made a cadet in the East India Company’s service in 1817; promoted to captain in 1826; served in Burma from 1826–27; was invalided home in 1831; settled in London; promoted to major in 1836; and retired in 1839. He published verse and prose from 1831–1857. Upon returning from India, Campbell was introduced by the sculptor Alexander Munro to Dante Gabriel and William Michael Rossetti, with whom he became good friends. He subsequently published short stories, prose sketches and poetry in numerous periodicals and assisted with the publication of the Germ in 1850.
