A good Autograph Letter Signed, providing an entertaining account of his early career. 5 pp. 8 x 5 inches, in good condition, some light toning to final page. 14 St John’s Wood Road, December 1897. Gordon Frederick Browne (1858-1932), artist and children’s book illustrator. He was born in Banstead, the younger son of notable book illustrator Hablot Knight Browne (“Phiz”). From the 1880s, Browne was one of Britain’s most prolific illustrators. “…After the usual time at what may be called ‘Dr Whackem’s school for the sons of gentlemen’, in fact a private school, I had a rather short & rather jerky kind of art school training, partly at S.Kensington which did not come up to my then lofty ideal and longer at Heatherleys. Then worked for a short time under Mr Cooper the engraver with the double branched purpose of earning something & learning how to draw on the wood, a most useless piece of knowledge now a days…”
