Description

Autograph Letter Signed, to Mr. Stevenson, saying he called today to say Farewell, thanking him for his kindness. 1 page 7 x 4½ inches, in good condition, address leaf (light traces of mounting). Undated. Uncommon. Gustavus Vaughan Brooke (1818 – 1866) was an Irish stage actor who enjoyed success in Ireland, England and Australia. On a return voyage to Australia in the S.S. London in 1866, the ship sank in a storm. Brooke toiled bravely at the pumps of the sinking vessel, and when all hope was gone was seen standing composedly by the companion way. As the last overcrowded lifeboat pulled away he called “Give my last farewell to the people of Melbourne”.
