BIRDWOOD, Sir George. 10072

Autograph Letter Signed, two months before his death, to Mr. Partington, about a rare Hindostani grammar dated 1772 which should be placed in a library, offering an interview, explaining that “My life is now wholly absorbed in the war…” 8 pp. 6 x 4 inches, in good condition. Ealing [24 April 1917]. Sir George Christopher Molesworth Birdwood (1832–1917), administrator in India, took part as a naval surgeon in the Persian expedition of 1856–7. Upon his return and in addition to his professional duties Birdwood devoted himself to a variety of social and cultural institutions that helped to shape the new, post-1857, city of Bombay. In 1868 he returned to England, where he began a new career promoting opportunities for cultural and intellectual exchange between India and Great Britain.
