Autograph Letter Signed ‘George Barnard’, to E.W.Cooke, the marine artist, discussing information received from Faraday, referring also to the Graphic Society and the “National Gallery commission”. 3 pp. 7 x 4 inches, in fine condition, 37 Upper Charlotte Street [1850s]. Uncommon. George Barnard (1807-1890), artist, brother-in-law of Michael Faraday, and one of the first Alpine artists to draw mountains with any degree of accuracy. He was among the earliest members of the Alpine Club who travelled widely in the Alps. Author of Switzerland, Scenes and Incidents of Travel in the Bernese Oberland & &. [1843], and Drawings from Nature: Instructions in Sketching with Examples from the Pyrenees and Switzerland [1865]. “The last time I had the pleasure of meeting you was at the Graphic Society when Faraday, you and I had a chat about the National Gallery commission.”
