Autograph Letter Signed, thanking his correspondent for the specimen received on “return from a botanical trip to the Highlands”, identifying the plant as Nostoc Commune, a species of Alga, and describing its habitat. 2 pp. 7 x 4 inches, with signature on integral leaf, in good condition. 83 Great King Street, Edinburgh, 15 August 1846. John Hutton Balfour (1808-1884), botanist, Keeper of the Royal Botanic Garden and Queen’s botanist for Scotland. He was the first in Edinburgh to introduce classes for practical instruction in the use of the microscope.
