A.H.Sayce/ 3 pp. 8 x 5 inches, fine. The Academy, 43 Wellington Street, Strand, 16 September 1874. Charles Edward Cutts Birchall Appleton (1841 –1879) was an Oxford don and scholarly entrepreneur. He is best remembered for founding the periodical The Academy in 1869; it was intended a forum for an intellectual and cultural revival in the German style. The purpose was to encourage an elite with “sound information and correct taste in intellectual matters”. At the Second International Congress of Orientalists, held in London in September 1874, the famous British biologist and palaeontologist Professor Richard Owen served as the President of the Ethnological Section
