Autograph Letter Signed ‘Allenby’, to Mr. Gary (the Hon. Hampson Gary, US Ambassador), sending him “some light literature” to read during his illness. A good one page example, 8 x 6 inches. 24 Wetherby Gardens [London], 19 August, no year given. Field Marshal Edmund Henry Hynman Allenby, 1st Viscount Allenby (1861-1936), as commander in chief of the Egyptian Expeditionary Force, had entered Jerusalem in December 1917, and defeated the Turks at Megiddo (1918). His next important appointment was as High Commissioner for Egypt, a post which he held until 1925. Hampson Gary (1873-1952) was appointed assistant solicitor in the State Department in 1915. In 1917 he was appointed by President Woodrow Wilson as diplomatic agent and consul general to Egypt in charge of American interests in Palestine, Syria, and Arabia, where he formed a close friendship with Field Marshal Viscount Allenby.
