Autograph Letter Signed ‘Rutherford Alcock’, to Jabez Hogg, discussing committee matters, the employment of an architect, warning that “if we should determine not to build we should have to pay him for his plans …” 3 pp. 7 x 4 inches, fine. Boscastle, 24 September 1875. Sir Rutherford Alcock (1809-97), diplomat in China and Japan, author of The Capital of the Tycoon [1863] and other works on Japan. In 1858 he was appointed the first consul-general in Japan, on the conclusion of Lord Elgin’s treaty. Jabez Hogg (1817–1899), ophthalmic surgeon.
