Bath, 14 February 1823. Sir Whitelaw Ainslie (1767-1837), surgeon with the East India Company. Ainslie’s major work was published in 1813 as the Materia medica of Hindustan and was expanded to the two-volume Materia Indica in 1826. This was the first book-length study of Indian medicines to be published by a British writer. Clemenza, or, The Tuscan Orphan, a tragic drama in five acts, by Whitelaw Ainslie, was published in Bath in 1822, and in London by Rodwell and Martin in 1823.
