Autograph Letter Signed‚ to ‘Dear Sir & Brother’‚ agreeing to give two readings in Hull‚ and setting out his terms. 2½ pages 8 x 5 inches‚ folds‚ second leaf laid down (some paste show through). Bristol‚ 28 January 1864. John Chippendale Montesquieu Bellew [formerly Higgin] (1823–1874)‚ popular preacher and public reader. In 1851 he travelled to India‚ where he was chaplain of St John's Cathedral in Calcutta from December 1852 to 1855. During this time he wrote for the Morning Post and edited the Bengal Hurkaru. During the late 1850s and early 1860s‚ he built up a reputation as one of the most popular preachers in London‚ becoming as well known as Charles Spurgeon. A contemporary commented that Bellew had ‘a disregard for conventionalities and an unaffected love of easy life‚ like an old French abbé‚ in his airy‚ defiant‚ gallant‚ philandering way’. Much of his leisure time was devoted to writing: besides many of his sermons‚ he also published Shakespeare's Home at New Place‚ Stratford-upon-Avon (1863)‚ a novel‚ Blount Tempest (3 vols.‚ 1865)‚ and an anthology of English poetry‚ Poets' Corner (1869). After his conversion to Roman Catholicism‚ he devoted his time to public readings. His readings were said to equal those of Fanny Kemble and Charles Dickens‚ and his performance of Thomas Hood's ‘Bridge of Sighs’ to rival that of Thackeray. [DNB] Price : £65.00
