François Claude Amour‚ marquis de Bouillé (1739-1800) general. He served in the Seven Years' War (1756–1763)‚ and as governor in the Antilles conducted operations against the British in the American Revolutionary War. He became Commander in Chief of the Army of the Meuse‚ Sarre and Moselle in 1790. He proposed to Louis XVI that the royal family should take refuge in a frontier town where an appeal could be made to other nations. When Louis XVI was arrested at Varennes (21 June 1791)‚ Bouillé went into exile in Russia and died in London in 1800. He is the 'Bouillé' alluded to in La Marseillaise.

Jean-Baptiste de Nompère de Champagny 1st Duc de Cadore (1756-1834) French admiral and politician entered the French navy in 1774 and fought throughout the American war. In August 1804 Napoleon made him minister of the interior. In August 1807 the Emperor chose him to succeed Talleyrand as minister for foreign affairs. He directed the annexation of the Papal States in April 1808 worked to secure the abdication of Charles IV of Spain in May 1808 negotiated the Peace of Vienna (1809) and the marriage of Napoleon.

Having settled in London in 1842‚ he published nearly fifty works‚ including Beautés de la Poésie Anglaise (5 vols.‚ 1860-72) and Rambles through Rome (1852). His wife Clara was a musical composer and author. Her last work was the translation into English of the Italian libretto of ‘Lucia di Lammermoor’ for the English stage. In this heartbreaking letter her husband tells his friend that Clara used to know Greek‚ Latin‚ Italian‚ German‚ Spanish‚ French and English. The DNB appends the unpleasant warning that “Excessive literary labour affected her brain”.

Claude François Chauveau-Lagarde (1756–1841)‚ lawyer‚ came to prominence during the Revolution as a lawyer for the defence. He was entrusted with the defense of Louis-Marie-Florent‚ duc du Châtelet‚ Jean-Sylvain Bailly‚ Madame Roland and Charlotte Corday‚ who had assassinated Marat. Chauveau-Lagarde became famous as the lawyer who took on the defence of Marie Antoinette. Once sentence had been pronounced on the Queen‚ he was summoned to appear before the committee‚ accused of having defended the Queen all too well‚ but he managed to justify his actions.

James Darmesteter (1849-1894) French author orientalist and antiquarian. In 1877 he became teacher of Persian language at the École des Hautes Études. He continued his research with his Études iraniennes (1883) and ten years later published a complete translation of the Avesta and associated Zend (lit. "commentary") with historical and philological commentary of his own (Zend Avesta 3 vols. 1892-1893) in the Annales du Musée Guimet. In 1885 he was appointed professor in the Collège de France and was sent to India in 1886 on a mission to collect the popular songs of the Afghans a translation of which with a valuable essay on the Afghan language and literature he published on his return. His impressions of English dominion in India were conveyed in Lettres sur l'Inde (1888).

Longueville led the French delegation in the talks that led to the Treaty of Westphalia which ended the Thirty Years War (1648). Longueville began his siege of Autrey Castle in early August 1638. He made a break in the ramparts on 17 August.

An impressive legal document‚ with many seals and stamps of notaries‚ bearing a good example of the signature of Count Saurau‚ witnessed by the French ambassador in Vienna. Comte Joseph Franz Saurau‚ diplomat‚ at one stage the Austrian ambassador in St. Petersburg. In early 1797 Count Saurau commissioned Franz Josef Haydn‚ considered the greatest living Austrian composer‚ to write a hymn for the birthday of the Austrian Emperor Franz II. The Emperor Hymn became (in 1922) the national anthem of the German Reich. The document also bears the signature of Louis-Guillaume Otto‚ the French ambassador in Vienna who negotiated the terms of the marriage of Napoleon with the Archduchess Marie-Louise.

They reflect the moderate feminism of many French women writers of her day. Like George Sand‚ Marie d’Agoult and Rosa Bonheur‚ she believed that a woman of talent had a right to pursue a career of her own.

Louis Servin (1555-1626)‚ celebrated French lawyer and author. He became advocate general to the parliament of Paris‚ and defended firstly the liberties of the Gallican church‚ and then the constitution against the encroachment of the royal prerogative. During a protest against Louis XIII in 1626‚ Servin suddenly fell‚ and expired at the king’s feet.

Auguste Vacquerie (1819-1895)‚ French journalist and man of letters. His earlier romantic productions include a volume of poems‚ L'Enfer de l'esprit (1840); a translation of the Antigone (1844) in collaboration with Paul Meurice; and Tragaldabas (1848)‚ a melodrama. He was one of the principal contributors to the Evenement and followed Hugo into his exile in Jersey. In 1869 he returned to Paris‚ and with Meurice and others founded the anti-imperial Rappel. His articles in this paper were more than once the occasion of legal proceedings. After 1870 he became editor. Other of his works are Souvent homme varie (1859)‚ a comedy in verse; Jean Baudry (1863)‚ the most successful of his plays; Aujourd'hui et demain (1875); Futura (pub. 1900)‚ and poems on philosophical and humanitarian subjects.

His major work‚ the ‘Table of the physical and moral state of the workmen employed in silk and wool‚ cotton manufacture’‚ published in 1840‚ led to new laws on child labour and on town planning.
